Yuletide letter 2020
Oct. 20th, 2020 07:54 amDear Yuletide Writer,
Thank you for writing for me! I’m The_Kings_Scribe on AO3.
Likes: I like gen, het and slash, any rating. No POV preferences. I like found families, competence kink, loyalty kink, history, hurt/comfort, and humour. And lots more things, but for the life of me I can’t name any more, sorry I know that’s not very helpful…
Dislikes: incest, underage sex, child abuse, rape, Mpreg, Alpha/Beta/Omega, bestiality, watersports, scat, guro, necrophilia, D/s, humiliation, genderswap, anvilicious issuefic, fics that take the characters out of the canon setting or change the canon's genre or tone (examples: In Space! In Renaissance Italy! In a coffee shop! Serial killers!), zombies in canons that don't feature zombies (same goes for more generic apocalypse scenarios), death of canon characters who didn't die in the original.
So, here are the fandoms and characters I requested:
Langelot Series - Langelot
After almost two decades of combing through every place where second-hand books are sold, I finally recently completed my collection of this childhood fave: all 40 Langelot books and the two Corinne ones. I loved this series so much as a kid, and they’ve held up amazingly well! It’s James Bond, but for kids, and more grounded in reality. I loved the sense of humor, I loved that the protagonist was smart and competent but still allowed to make mistakes sometimes, and I loved that, despite the corny pen name, the author came across like he knew what he was talking about (and, as it turns out, he actually did).
So I’d like something that revisits this verse. Just some ideas to get you started:
-Langelot’s wondeful father-son-like relationship with Capitaine Montferrand and subsequent semi-adoption into the family. The first "proper" introduction to the captain’s wife? The first family dinner he was invited to? Tutoring the children?
-Anything about Langelot hanging out "after hours" with people his age, either work friends like Gaspard or Mistigri, or civilians like Choupette.
-Outsider’s perspective: Montferrand bragging to his colleagues about his protégé (as implied in Volkoff’s «for adults» spy novels)? Carefully edited watercooler conversations at SNIF HQ that lead to Langelot becoming as much of a legend as Pierrot la Marmite?
-Casefic: any famous scientific innovations Langelot had a hand in keeping out of the wrong hands?
-Lifting the time warp that makes Langelot perpetually eighteen :) What does his career and personal life look like at thirty? Fifty? Post Cold War, modern day?
Daredevil - Mike Murdock, Matt Murdock
Sooo. Lots of things happened since I first requested this last year! I have read the Annual, and it was everything I could have hoped for. Mike's existance is, if anything, even more convoluted than it used to be and I'm here for it! I want all the fic set in the newly-established reality.
-One thing I do regret is losing Matt's memories of being an only child who made up an imaginary twin brother to roleplay as out of whole cloth, and then having to deal with him becoming real. But hey, Zdarsky himself said the new status quo was fragile, so I'm totally okay with Matt ending up with two sets of memories and having to sort out how he feels about it all and how he wants to relate to Mike.
-Relatedly, Mike exploring his new memories and testing the extent of the reality rewrite. He has a BFF now, and people who actually knew him from 'before'. How does it feel to be a real boy(tm)?
-Fic exploring Matt and Mike's childhood. From twin switcheroo antics to more fraught subjects like Mike's guilt over the accident... Let's not forget that each of them kept a honking big secret from the other. They didn't always get along great, even if they do love each other.
-Silver Age-era antics! I know Zdarsky said Mike was off doing his own thing (which was what, exactly? I wanna know!) while Matt pretended to be him, but again: fragile, malleable reality. Pre-tweak, in Soule's run, Mike clearly had memories of hanging out with Foggy and Karen. Did he wander back into his brother's life mid-deception, forcing Matt to come up with even more out-there lies? How the hell did Matt get away with faking Mike's death as Daredevil?
-What has Mike been doing since the end of Soule's run? What is he planning with Butch right now? What does he make of Matt's current troubles? I dearly hope Mike and Matt can reconcile and start to build a real relationship eventually. Maybe Mike visited Matt in the hospital after his accident? Maybe he looks in on Daredevil's trial? Will he ever hang out with Foggy again in less fraught circumstances? Will he ever get to meet his mother?
-As of me writing this letter, Mike still doesn't know that Matt is Daredevil. Surely he must find out at some point! What is his relationship with Daredevil anyway? Back in the old days, did DD (without revealing his identity) ever ask Mike to pretend to be him? Is that why he never qestions why the fuck the Marvelverse Wiki lists 'Mike Murdock, deceased' as the 'first Daredevil?'.
Fandom-specific DNWs: Mike getting permanently killed, Matt and Mike ending the fic as enemies.
The Epic of Gilgamesh - Gilgamesh, Enkidu
An oldie but goodie. They go hilariously quickly from 'I want to fight this arrogant fuck' to 'BFFs forever'! Whether or not you think they were fucking like rabbits, you can't deny the intensity of their fixation on each other.
-Gilgamesh's tyranny gets glossed over rather quickly. We're meant to take away that Enkidu is a positive influence on him; what I want to know is, How? How does Enkidu's presence make Gilgamesh a better/more just ruler?
-Gilgamesh introducing Enkidu to all the awesome things civilization has to offer. Bread! Beer! Beds! Hair and beard grooming! Fashionable clothes! Patiently teaching Enkidu to read and write, maybe? (And sex. Sex totally counts as a marvel of civilisation, right?)
-Conversely, Enkidu being in his element in the wilderness and teaching Gilgamesh some survival skills! (And wild, outdoor sex.)
-Daily life in Uruk. Outsider POV: what does the Average Joe make of their epic adventures? The palace staff? Ishtar's priestesses? Gilgamesh's mother? The hunter from the beginning?
-The hunt for Humbaba is frustratingly fragmentary; feel free to elaborate and embellish!
-Post-canon fic: how is Enkidu remembered by Gilgamesh and the people of Uruk 10, 20, 50 years down the line?
-The AU where Gilgamesh is the one who dies of illness. Of course Enkidu would be devastated - but probably in an entirely different way! How does he mourn? (Enkidu and Gilgamesh's mother awkwardly trying to be there for each other: yes please!) Does he succeed in bringing back the herb? Does he even try? What are the political ramifications? Does Enkidu have to step up and rule Uruk? (Obviously I'm lifting my character death DNW for this one).
